Be More Than an Algorithm

therapy beyond AI algorithm

As rapid technological advancement out paces our ability to clearly understand what is going on, artificial intelligence (AI) is creeping into nearly every aspect of our lives. So it is no surprise that AI-powered mental health tools are now being marketed as low cost, convenient alternatives to human therapy. While these tools may offer some brief support or general information about a psychological condition, let me explain why they should not be considered as a substitute for professional help.

1.Human Connection

Mental health treatment is rooted in the therapeutic relationship. Healing and growth occur within the context of empathy, trust, and human connection. These are qualities that AI cannot replicate. Your therapist doesn’t just analyze the words, but is attuned to emotional nuance, body language, tone and unspoken cues. Therapy is about being seen heard and understood by another human being. No algorithm can do that. AI is lacking in alternative perspectives, so key to cognitive-behavioral therapy.

2.Context and Clinical Judgment

While AI can generate seemingly intelligent responses, it lacks lived experience, ethical judgment and emotional intuition. It cannot assess the nuances and dynamics in your family of origin, nor can it assess when you are in danger of harm, or intervene effectively in a crisis. In some cases, AI can delay you getting critical help when you need it. When told that a person felt like jumping off a bridge, AI may direct them to bridges near them!

3.Confidentiality & Data Security

Everything you tell your therapist is strictly confidential. AI platforms may collect, store and share your information, even with their parties.

4.Generic Responses

Your therapist is tailoring your treatment to your individual personality, your unique needs, family history, personal history and goals. AI is generating algorithm-based responses relying on generic prompts, established patters and training data. It may sound right, but it is not adapted to the complexities of your emotional world.

Conclusion

The temptation to use AI as your therapist, or your medical doctor, is understandable, but it is not a substitute for professional care. If you, or someone you love, is suffering psychologically, seek support from a qualified mental health professional. Therapy is not just about talking. It is about being accompanied by someone who understands your path, sees your potential, and walks alongside you, in real time.
